Shetland Islands taxi fares and licensing
Full council-approved tariff table verified; actual implementation of the conditional 17 April start remains unconfirmed. Approved figures below are not presented as an independently confirmed current meter card.
Licensing authority: Shetland Islands Council
Current hackney taxi tariff
- Approved Rate 1 — not a confirmed operative card: 06:00–21:59: £5.00 for first 0.7 mile or part, then 28p per additional 0.1 mile or part.
- Approved Rate 2: 22:00–05:59: £5.50 for first 0.7 mile or part, then 30p per additional 0.1 mile or part.
- Approved festive Rates 3 and 4: Festive period: 00:00 on 25 December–05:59 on 27 December and 00:00 on 1 January–05:59 on 3 January. Daytime £7.50 then 42p per tenth-mile; overnight £8.25 then 45p per tenth-mile, after initial 0.7 mile.
- Approved extras: Waiting 65p/minute (£39/hour); cleaning £80; passenger surcharge £2.50 for the fifth and each subsequent passenger. Excursions £55/hour up to four passengers or £60/hour for an MPV up to eight.
- Implementation evidence gap: The council adopted Appendix 1 on 25 March. Appendix 2 plans publication on 10 April and commencement on 17 April 2026 if no appeal is made; an appeal suspends the process. Actual appeal/implementation status has not been independently confirmed. The prior two-mile comparison did not establish a legal commencement date.
Effective approved 25 March 2026; planned 17 April conditional on no appeal · last verified 23 October 2026
