Credit hire

Credit hire for taxi and private hire drivers

If your licensed vehicle is off the road after a non-fault accident, a suitable replacement may help you keep working while your own vehicle is repaired or your claim is resolved.

What is credit hire?

Credit hire is the temporary provision of a replacement vehicle where charges are deferred rather than paid upfront. The hire provider normally seeks recovery of reasonable charges from the at-fault party or their insurer.

Taxi and PH requirements

A replacement must be appropriate for the work you carry out and may need the correct council licensing, insurance and accessibility specification. Always confirm exactly what is included before accepting a vehicle.

What to have ready

  • Accident details and the other party's information
  • Your vehicle, plate and licensing details
  • Insurance and claim reference information
  • Evidence of your normal work and need for a replacement

Questions to ask a provider

  • Who is liable if charges cannot be recovered?
  • Is the vehicle licensed and insured for your work?
  • What daily rate, excess and mileage limits apply?
  • What evidence and cooperation will be required?
