Shropshire taxi and private-hire licensing

This guide publishes only fields supported by the cited official sources. Anything unresolved is visibly withheld rather than inferred.

Driver licensing
Official route/source found

Email the completed driver application and documents to taxis@shropshire.gov.uk after paying online. The council arranges identity, right-to-work, assessment and course appointments. Enhanced DBS Update Service evidence can remove the need to pay for a fresh DBS check.

Vehicle licensing
Official route/source found

Hackney vehicles must be wheelchair accessible. New diesel WAV applications during September 2025–March 2028 require Euro 6/6d and age under six; petrol Euro 5 under twelve. Electric vehicles have no age limit in the published chart. MOT supplied with an application must be within ten working days; ongoing inspections are six-monthly up to age nine, then four-monthly.

Operator licensing
Official route/source found

Policy 2023–2027 requires a fit-and-proper assessment. Applicants without a current Shropshire driver licence provide basic DBS evidence; partners/directors/company secretaries continue annual basic disclosures unless licensed as drivers. Obtain the current operator application route from licensing.

Licensing fees

Current migrated council table: new driver £341 including DBS or £304 excluding DBS; renewal £274 excluding DBS. New/renew standard PHV £224/£230; hackney £213/£231. New operator up to 30 vehicles/one base £479, larger/multiple base £1,034; renewal £522/£1,186. These supersede the older site's 2025/26 amounts.

Taxi tariff
Official route/source found

Tariff scope checked 23 October 2026. The council card dated 17 October 2024 publishes £6/£6.50/£7 for the first mile in ordinary, night/Sunday/holiday and specified special-day bands, then 20p/30p/35p per started 176 yards. Waiting is printed as 15p/25p/30p per 30 seconds, without stating partial-period rounding; TECSI should not infer that rule. The special-day band begins at 00:01, leaving its first minute unresolved. Optional five-plus passenger scales and a £100 soiling charge are listed. The officer date is not an independently established legal commencement. Positive waiting is withheld from calculator results, and the first 00:00–00:01 minute on 24, 25 and 31 December is unavailable.

Mandatory qualifications

Council-organised driving assessment, driver-awareness/knowledge course, safeguarding/disability course, enhanced DBS and Update Service, DVLA and right-to-work checks, plus Group 2 medical by the applicant's GP or a doctor with full records access.

Withheld or still needing confirmation
  • Complete private-hire vehicle specifications and operator submission route remain to expand.
  • The festive card starts at 00:01, not 00:00; expose this textual boundary rather than silently changing it.
  • Optional large-party tariffs must not be imposed automatically without marking them optional.
