- Driver licensing
- Official route/source found
Rutland has separate hackney-carriage and private-hire driver routes, administered for the council by Peterborough City Council. A hackney driver may also drive Rutland private-hire vehicles, while a private-hire-only driver may not drive hackney carriages. New applicants must be at least 18, have held a full UK licence for more than one year, prove the right to work, complete the online route and provide the required checks and certificates before the council's appointment and suitability assessment.
- Vehicle licensing
- Official route/source found
Apply through the Peterborough licensing account for a Rutland hackney-carriage or private-hire vehicle licence. Both routes require a recent MOT dated within 30 days, the appropriate hire insurance and ownership evidence. Vehicles must meet the policy criteria introduced on 22 November 2024. Hackney vehicles are not licensed beyond 15 years; private-hire vehicles are not licensed beyond ten years, and roof signs are prohibited on private-hire vehicles.
- Operator licensing
- Official route/source found
A private-hire operator licence is required to accept or invite bookings. Apply through the Peterborough licensing account using the Rutland taxi operator route. The council must be satisfied that the operating address is suitable; a booking office may need planning permission, and premises accessible to the public require public-liability insurance. Drivers may work for an existing operator, but cannot accept bookings independently unless they hold an operator licence.
- Licensing fees
- Official evidence found; detail still to confirm
No numeric taxi-licensing fees are released from this record. The live general fee page still shows £133 for a driver and £218 for a vehicle, while a later archived statutory notice proposed higher figures from 8 June 2026 but allowed the final amounts to be modified after objections. A final modified schedule or an updated current fee page confirming which figures prevail was not located.
- Taxi tariff
- Official route/source found
No numeric hackney-carriage tariff is released. Rutland's current policy discusses fare cards where byelaws are adopted, but Appendix L is explicitly only an example and its monetary fields are blank. Private-hire fares are not regulated by the council and should be agreed with the operator before the journey. A blank policy template must not be converted into a live tariff.
- Mandatory qualifications
- Official route/source found
Applicants need an Enhanced DBS certificate and DBS Update Service subscription, DVLA licence and check code, an approved driving-assessment pass, medical certificate and right-to-work evidence. A statement of good conduct is also required after the stated period of overseas residence. The council arranges a suitability test for hackney applicants; the private-hire route additionally lists a taxi general competency certificate from Peterborough Regional College. All applications remain subject to the fit-and-proper assessment and NR3S checks.
Withheld or still needing confirmation
- Numeric fees are withheld because the current general fee page and later conditional statutory notice conflict, and the notice allowed modification after objections without a located final schedule.
- The current policy contains only a blank example hackney fare card conditional on byelaw adoption; no enacted numeric tariff or operative date was located.
- The current operator page does not state the licence duration or the applicant DBS requirement, so those details are not inferred from older material.
- External DBS, medical, driving-assessment and competency-course charges are not published as council licence fees and are not inferred.
