North East Derbyshire District Council · Sources checked 10 September 2026

Driver licensing
Official route/source found

Use North East Derbyshire's current online driver-licence application and book the separate council knowledge test through its self-service portal. The adopted policy requires a full driving licence held for at least one year and the specified fitness, medical, criminal-record, safeguarding and disability-awareness checks. The council may require a practical driving assessment where it determines one is appropriate.

Vehicle licensing
Official route/source found

Apply through the council's current online vehicle-licence service and use its separate MOT booking route where required. The adopted policy grants hackney-carriage and private-hire vehicle licences for six months unless a shorter term is appropriate. Every vehicle must pass the council-approved licensing test at each six-month renewal; this is additional to the MOT requirement that applies to hackney carriages from one year old.

Operator licensing
Official route/source found

Apply through the council's current online operator-licence service. The adopted policy normally grants a private-hire operator licence for five years and requires the operating base to be inside North East Derbyshire. The applicant and relevant company or partnership controllers must satisfy the council's suitability checks, provide the specified current DBS evidence, maintain the DBS Update Service and complete mandatory safeguarding training before grant or renewal.

Licensing fees
Official evidence found; detail still to confirm

The General Licensing Committee approved these advertised fees on 4 March 2025, but the confirmed minutes do not state their commencement date. A combined driver licence is £194 for one year, £256 for two years or £311 for three years, plus DBS where required; the driver theory test is £50. A six-month vehicle licence is £151 new or £123 renewal, and the vehicle test is £75. Operator licences are £291 for one year, £369 for two, £447 for three, £526 for four or £604 for five years.

Taxi tariff
Official route/source found

No numeric hackney-carriage tariff is released from this record. The council's confirmed October 2020 minutes adopted an alignment with Chesterfield's tariff after consultation, but the currently available North East Derbyshire service and policy pages do not supply a consolidated fare card or its operative date. The older proposal table and another council's later tariff must not be treated as North East Derbyshire's current fares.

Mandatory qualifications
Official route/source found

A new driver must pass the council knowledge test, complete council-approved safeguarding and disability-awareness training and assessment, meet the DVLA Group 2 medical standard, and provide the required enhanced DBS certificate with DBS Update Service membership. A full driving licence must have been held for at least one year. A practical driving examination is conditional where the council determines it is appropriate, not stated as universal in the adopted policy.

Withheld or still needing confirmation
  • The advertised numeric fee table was approved by the General Licensing Committee on 4 March 2025, but neither the approval minute nor the verified report states the date on which the approved fees took effect.
  • No current council-linked consolidated hackney-carriage fare card and operative date were located. The final 2020 decision aligned the tariff with Chesterfield at that time but does not establish today's numeric table, so tariff figures are withheld.
  • The council has published newer policy material as draft and reported in February 2026 that policy changes were forthcoming. Those drafts are excluded; the summaries use the 2022 policy text that the Council's final October 2022 minutes expressly adopted, together with current self-service routes.
  • DBS, medical, training and any council-required practical-assessment charges may change independently and are not inferred from the licence-fee table.
