Driver licensing
Official route/source found

High Peak issues a combined hackney-carriage and private-hire driver licence. Applicants must be at least 21 and have held a driving licence for more than 12 months. Follow the council's ordered application process, pay the council fee, email Licensing to book the knowledge test, and attend with the completed form and original identity, address, right-to-work, DBS, safeguarding and medical evidence.

Vehicle licensing
Official route/source found

Complete the council vehicle form and provide valid hire insurance, the V5C for a vehicle not previously licensed, the 12-month fee and an MOT no more than one month old from a council-approved testing centre. All MOT advisories must be rectified before plates issue. A further approved MOT is required six months into each annual vehicle-licence period. The council currently states that no new hackney plates are available.

Operator licensing
Official route/source found

A private-hire operator must be based within the High Peak authority area. Submit the operator form and operating-base, insurance, driver and vehicle documents, plus for each relevant applicant or company officer a recent DBS certificate, statutory declaration, right-to-work evidence, driving licence and recent address evidence. Email the complete set to Licensing; the council then arranges the senior-officer appointment and payment for the one-year grant.

Licensing fees
Official route/source found

The council's 2026/27 schedule lists a new three-year driver licence including the first knowledge test at £350 and renewal at £300. A new vehicle licence including brackets and plates is £260 and annual renewal is £210. A new one-year operator licence is £175 for one to three vehicles, rising by fleet band to £1,000 for 51 or more; the corresponding five-year renewal charges range from £600 to £3,600.

Taxi tariff
Official route/source found

The council's official 2023 notice records an enacted fare increase from 2 March 2023; it is not merely a consultation proposal. The current operating page requires meters to use the council's current fares table, but it does not link the 2023 numeric notice or reproduce current figures. Because the official current source chain is incomplete, no numeric tariff is released pending council confirmation.

Mandatory qualifications
Official route/source found

New drivers need the council-specified enhanced DBS certificate linked to the DBS Update Service, the prescribed safeguarding-course certificate, a medical dated within three months, original identity and right-to-work evidence and a pass in the local knowledge test. The council states that alternative DBS or safeguarding qualifications are not accepted. Applicants for private-hire work must also provide an offer of work from a licensed operator.

Withheld or still needing confirmation
  • The 2 March 2023 fare increase is evidenced as enacted, not proposed, but the current council pages do not link it as the present numeric fare table; tariff figures remain withheld.
  • The 2026/27 fee schedule is current and year-labelled but does not print a separate commencement day for its taxi charges; no exact date is inferred.
