- Driver licensing
- Official route/source found
Apply on the council form and submit the current driving licence, enhanced DBS material, right-to-work evidence and other supporting documents by post or email to taxi.licensing@derby.gov.uk. Applicants must be at least 18, have held a full UK or European driving licence for at least 12 months, complete the required tests and training, and pay the three-year new-driver fee when applying.
- Vehicle licensing
- Official route/source found
New and renewal applications are available through the council's online service. A complete application needs the relevant form, V5, bill of sale, correct insurance and, for a new hackney carriage, a meter-calibration certificate. Every vehicle must pass the council supplementary inspection as well as MOT; vehicles aged five or more are inspected every six months. From 13 March 2026, a private-hire vehicle must be under nine years old at first licensing.
- Operator licensing
- Official route/source found
The operating base must be within Derby and dispatched vehicles and drivers must also be Derby-licensed. Submit the council application form, five-year fee, a current Basic DBS for each relevant applicant, partner or director unless the stated licensed-driver exception applies, and right-to-work evidence for individuals and partnerships. Check planning permission first; mandatory safeguarding training is required before grant or renewal.
- Licensing fees
- Official evidence found; detail still to confirm
The council's current 2026/27 table lists a three-year new driver licence at £340 and renewal at £305, knowledge test £85, safeguarding course £60, enhanced DBS including administration £72 and hackney driver test £50. From 1 August 2026, annual vehicle fees are £140 new or £120 renewal, rising to £175 or £155 for vehicles over five. Five-year operator totals run from £574.54 for 0-10 vehicles to £1,785.76 for 151 or more. The driver section is labelled 2026/27 but retains a conflicting introductory date sentence, so no precise driver-fee start date is asserted.
- Taxi tariff
- Official evidence found; detail still to confirm
The fare table currently linked by the council sets Tariff 1 at a £3.20 initial charge plus 20p for each succeeding 176 yards and 20p per 60 seconds waiting. Other initial charges are £3.60, £3.80 and £4.80 for the stated evening, weekend and festive periods; equivalent five-or-more-passenger initial charges are £5.20, £5.60, £5.80 and £6.80. A £60 cleaning fee is shown. The table itself does not state its adoption or effective date.
- Mandatory qualifications
- Official route/source found
A new driver must pass the Derby City knowledge test, a taxi-specific practical driving test and the council safeguarding-awareness course. Dual-licence applicants must take the advanced practical test covering safe wheelchair transport. Applicants also need a DVSA Group 2 medical, enhanced DBS with Online Update Service subscription, right-to-work evidence and, where relevant, an overseas certificate of good conduct.
Withheld or still needing confirmation
- The currently linked Derby hackney-carriage fare table does not print an adoption or effective date; its numeric values are publishable only with that caveat.
- The driver-fee section is headed 2026/27 but retains an introductory sentence saying fees are valid from April 2025 to 31 March 2026. The numeric 2026/27 values are current on the page, but no exact driver-fee start date is asserted.
